A hurricane hole is a harbor or bay where the geography itself provides natural protection from storm surge, high winds, and dangerous seas. Not every harbor qualifies. A true hurricane hole requires protection from multiple wind directions, limited fetch, good holding ground, and a channel geometry that dissipates incoming swell before it reaches anchored vessels.

Bahia de Luperon meets every criterion. The bay is enclosed on three sides. The entrance channel is narrow and oriented to deflect North Atlantic swell. The bottom is thick mud over clay, which provides excellent holding. The surrounding hills break wind from every quadrant except the channel mouth, which faces northwest away from the prevailing storm track.
